SUMMARY:Brussels Study Trip: The EU and Global Migration
DESCRIPTION:Brussels Study Trip: The EU and Global Migration\nPhoto: European Union 2017 – Source: European Parliament; https://multimedia.europarl.europa.eu/de/photo/outside-view-in-summer-paul-henry-spaak-building-of-the-european-parliament-in-brussels_20170619_EP-055335__WME_379\nA summer school offered by STUBE Rheinland\, the ESG Koblenz\, and STUBE Rheinland-Pfalz/ Saarland\nBrussels is a city that hosts the headquarters of many European institutions and NGOs. It is also the capital of a former colonial power looking back on a violent history of rubber mining and exploitation in the former „Belgian Congo“. Despite all of this\, Brussels today is home to a large diaspora community from the former colony\, and neighborhoods such as Matongé show the many facets of this diverse city. \nOn this trip\, we explore how migration\, migration policy\, and development cooperation are connected. Ranging from the work of international institutions to local engagement\, we ask critical questions like how we can build inclusive and diverse societies\, or construct relationships on equal terms between countries in the EU and the so-called „Global South“. Together\, we explore the meaning of migration for the city of Brussels\, as well as the perspectives of the EU and „Global South“ countries on migration policy. We ask how policies ensuring fairer work migration and asylum can be implemented. We engage critically with Belgium‘s colonial past and its implications for migration\, development cooperation\, and the diverse city today. \nThe study trip to Brussels aims to raise awareness of this important issue\, and offer a glimpse of current and future possibilities for creating inclusive societies and relationships on equal terms in a world shaped by migration and interdependence. \nPlease note: Due to overwhelming interest\, we have had to adapt our registration process.
